This past week, the story broke that Adobe, publishers of the vastly popular PhotoShop graphics program, had inserted at the behest of the U.S. government "bugs" into its software which would detect if users were *possibly* attempting to counterfeit U.S. currency.

So, without further ado, here's how to circumvent Adobe's ham-handed attempt to sneak stuff under the radar of its paying customers:

(Tested on XP / OS-X 10.3)

1) Assuming your scanner will still scan money, scan/acquire a nice TIFF of
some, preview it in some less Orwellian app. that still gives a damn about
your individual rights, then copy it to the clipboard.

2) Open a new PS. doc to size and make two layers. Paste the image of the U.S. currency on the SECOND layer. Layer one can be totally empty.

3) Save your masterwork.

Man, that is apallingly easy.

Pass it on, if you will.

Just to be clear, I am not advocating counterfeiting ... but the whole idea that all PhotoShop users are to be considered circumspect, and behind their backs to boot, is just really offensive. As the article says, other competitors also feature the same bit of "spy code" but are open about it.

Besides, as good of a program as PhotoSHop is, it can't do textures, submerged watermarks, or that little metal strip that is in the bill ... so it plays out as just one more dumbass move to make it look like they're "doing something about it" when in fact it will have zero net effect on counterfeiting, which has increased by 33,000% since the last round of "counterfeit-proof" bills came out in 1995. (and that's the statistic as reported by the BPE; no telling what it actually is.)
